Creating a product to assist older adults with aging in place.

Made in collaboration with Liz Harby, lizharby.com

PROJECT PROMPT

Create a product or service for older adults living at home that can help them remain independent as they “age in place”.

WHY SHOULD WE “AGE IN PLACE”?

77% of older adults hope to remain in their home long-term as they age.

Only 50% believe that they will have the resources available to.

36% plan to modify their home to be accessible to them as they age.

REDEFINING OUR DESIGN GOAL

How might we create a rollator that assists the user in sitting, standing, and walking, while also being easy to store, all while avoiding feeling ignominy or burden and follows an anti-institutional design?

INITIAL SKETCHES

After a deep dive into sketching ideations of what our rollator could be, we eventually landed on this design.

  • Ladder side design to help the user stand up.

  • Top and back handles for different assistance styles.

  • Foldable seat for resting.

  • Vibrant blue design to catch the eye.

CAD RENDERS

  • Two arm/hand grips, for choice of armrests for more forearm and back support or standard handles for standard movement!

  • A foldable design for easy storage!

  • A fold-down seat for resting!

  • A side ladder-style design for sit-to-stand assistance!

  • Locking wheels!

  • Adjustable leg height!

And a stylish, personal flair!
